LLANDFILL WASTE CELL CONSTRUCTION
CLIENT: NEWPORT CITY COUNCIL
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
Our company were involved in early discussions with the client during the design stage of a 10500m² asbestos cell within the landfill site. These discussions led to the use of bales of tyres conforming to PAS 108 being utilised to form the drainage layer beneath the cell. The use of these tyres replaced to requirement to utilise quarried aggregate to form the drainage layer that has been used for the construction of all previous cells.
This method has led to a cost saving for the client of over 40% in the drainage layer of the cell, the reduction of over 8500 tonnes of quarried aggregate and a much-improved hydraulic flow rate within the base of the cell. The replacement of aggregates with tyres had also led to a better working environment for operatives due to a huge reduction in the release of airborne dust particles during the tipping of the aggregate on site.
